The Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and SKB, Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, are the latest organisations to be accepted as members of WANO; the not-for-profit industry association dedicated to international nuclear safety.
WANO Chairman, Mr Laurent Stricker welcomed the newest additions to the WANO community and said: "WANO is delighted to link even more nuclear professionals from around the world in safety knowledge transfer and information exchange."
"Now, more than ever before, WANO is committed to uniting and inspiring the world's nuclear utilities and organisations in a common purpose: sustained safety excellence through international cooperation."
Reflecting this commitment, in late 2010, WANO opened its doors to a broader range of organisations involved in operating and maintaining commercial reactors.
The WANO Governing Board unanimously accepted AECL's and SKB's membership applications in early 2011.
Based in London with regional centres in Moscow, Tokyo, Paris and Atlanta, WANO members operate some 440 nuclear units in more than 30 countries around the world. With safety as its sole focus, WANO supports members through peer reviews as well as operating experience, professional development and technical support and exchange initiatives.
