Update on Earthquake and tsunami affecting east coast of Japan

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake off the east coast of Japan was reported at 08:18:24 UTC today. A tsunami of one metre in height was reported at Ayuka, Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture at 18:02 local time (09.02 UTC).

Five nuclear power plants are located on the east coast – Higashi-Dori, Onagawa, Fukushima Daiichi, Fukushima Daiini and Tokai. As of 09.12 UTC, the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Japan reported no problems at any of these plants.

The situation is constantly evolving and we will continue to monitor developments over the next few hours.
