Professional and Technical Development
One way to prevent accidents is to help staff increase their skills and knowledge so they can deal with potential safety issues before they become problems.
The Professional and Technical Development programme provides a forum for WANO members to enhance their professional knowledge and skills. Specific activities include workshops, conferences, seminars, expert meetings and training courses.
These activities enable members from all regions to compare their operations and emulate best practices. Importantly, they also provide the ideal opportunity to establish relationships with colleagues from around the world.
Each activity focuses on improving plant performance in areas such as operations, maintenance and engineering. Specific topics are chosen on the basis of members’ requests, specific gaps or needs identified by WANO staff and/or industry trends.
Recent topics addressed by the programme include task observation and managers in the field, human performance, organisational effectiveness, operating experience, equipment reliability and work management.
Biennial General Meeting (BGM)
Every two years, WANO members meet at the Biennial General Meeting to elect a new President, to receive an update on WANO activities and progress, to listen to and share information with delegates from across the worldwide nuclear industry and to renew their commitment to nuclear safety. WANO’s flagship event typically involves around 500 delegates from around the globe, many of these at senior executive level. It is an invaluable opportunity for members to come together and renew their focus and commitment to nuclear safety alongside their industry peers.
Site Vice Presidents’ and Plant Managers’ Conference
On alternate years to the BGM, WANO conducts a Site Vice President and Plant Managers’ Conference to enable delegates to engage with other members on important industry issues. The regional centres rotate the responsibility for hosting these meetings and typically arrange a technical tour to conclude the meeting. The Site Vice Presidents’ and Plant Managers’ Conference in 2012 offered delegates the opportunity to visit Fukushima Daiichi.
Small-Group CEO Meetings
WANO regularly organises small-group CEO meetings to obtain high level member feedback. These meetings are hosted by a WANO member and are focused on high level discussion and information sharing.
