WANO’s strategic direction is set from its London office. WANO London is staffed by full-time business and administration professionals as well as international representatives seconded from member organisations for two- to four-year terms. The Operating Experience Central Team is based here, as is the head of the Pre-startup Peer Review Team. Official liaisons with international organisations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are conducted from London and WANO-wide communications material, including Inside WANO magazine and the public and members’ web sites, are produced by WANO London staff with the help of the regional centres.

Leadership

Laurent Stricker

Chairman

Laurent Stricker became Chairman of the WANO Governing Board in 2009 and was re-elected for a second two-year term. He is member of the board of the French Agency for Nuclear Waste (ANDRA) and was a member of numerous companies including the French Nuclear Energy Agency and EnBW in Germany.

He was Head of Nuclear Operations until 2005 and responsible for the operation of the French nuclear fleet and its staff of about 20,000 people. Mr. Stricker has held numerous positions within EDF, including Director of the Grid and of Thermal and Hydraulic Generation, Head of the Radiation Protection and Environment Department, Plant Manager at Saint-Laurent-des-Eaux and Head of the Bugey training centre. Mr. Stricker holds a ‘Diplôme d’Ingenieur’ from both the ‘Institute Polytechnique de Grenoble’ France, and the ‘Institute des Sciences et Techniques Nucléaires’, Saclay, France. He also holds a diploma from Nancy University in Eastern France. He is Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, a French National Order.

George Felgate

George Felgate

George Felgate was appointed Managing Director of WANO in September 2009.

Prior to this position he worked at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) in the US for 26 years, where he served in a variety of leadership positions including Vice President of Plant Operations and Vice President of Analysis.  Mr. Felgate has also held positions with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station in Cape Town, South Africa, the Fast Flux Test Facility in the US, and the US Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program.

Mr. Felgate holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the US Naval Academy and a master’s degree from the US Naval Postgraduate School.  He is a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program.
