José Gago commences his position as WANO Chair
José joins having served as General Manager and CEO of the Asociación Nuclear Ascó-Vandellós II (ANAV) based in Spain, and as Chair of the WANO Paris Centre Governing Board.
José Gago formally started as WANO Chair on 1 March 2025 in succession to Tom Mitchell, who has successfully completed his six year term.
José joins having served as General Manager and CEO of the Asociación Nuclear Ascó-Vandellós II (ANAV) based in Spain, and as Chair of the WANO Paris Centre Governing Board.
José commented: “It is an immense honour and privilege to become Chair of this special Association. WANO’s mission – to maximise the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants worldwide – is as relevant today as ever. I am pleased and deeply honoured to step into the role of WANO Chair during a particularly dynamic time for the nuclear industry.”
He continued: “The heart of this organisation is its members. I look forward to working closely with all our members as we unite to move this unique organisation forward, with a shared spirit of teamwork and willingness to improve with a culture of cooperation and openness. I am proud to return to the WANO community, and will dedicate my efforts to work together with our staff worldwide to serve and help our members in this journey towards excellence.”
José has served as the President of the Spanish Nuclear Society, member of the Foro Nuclear Board of Directors and has kept close contact with the nuclear industry serving at several advisory boards and participating in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expert missions.
He has extensive technical and managerial experience in the whole nuclear fuel cycle – from fuel procurement and design, nuclear power plant design, licensing and operations, spent fuel interim storage, reprocessing and disposal, to radioactive waste management and plant decommissioning.
