WANO is aware of recent reports regarding an incident at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran.

A reported strike on 4 April affected an auxiliary area within the site perimeter, resulting in one fatality among site security personnel and damage to a support building. No impact on nuclear safety systems has been reported and radiation levels remain normal. This follows a number of reported incidents in the vicinity of the site in recent weeks.

WANO remains committed to promoting the highest standards of nuclear safety and reliability worldwide.

WANO Governing Board Resolution on Nuclear Safety

The 2024 Special Resolution underscores continued support to all nuclear operators and emphasises that any military activity affecting nuclear facilities, personnel, or supporting infrastructure is incompatible with maintaining nuclear safety.

International Nuclear Safety Frameworks

WANO reaffirms its support for the International Atomic Energy Agency Seven Pillars of Nuclear Safety and Security and the Five Principles for the protection of nuclear facilities. These frameworks remain fundamental to ensuring that nuclear installations are not placed at risk and that operators can perform their duties safely and without interference.

WANO will continue to follow developments and stands ready to support its members in maintaining safe, secure and reliable operators.
