Generating a Safer Future Together

Welcome to this special 30th anniversary issue of Inside WANO, which includes a review of the BGM and a special 30th anniversary video featuring key figures from WANO’s history. Looking back over the last 30 years, the overall margin of nuclear safety and reliability has improved worldwide. WANO has performed a key role in this, working together with its members to assess, benchmark and improve performance.

In marking the anniversary, it was our great pleasure to hold our Biennial General Meeting recently in London, under the theme ‘30 years of WANO: Generating a Safer Future Together’. At the event, 450 of the industry's most senior executives gathered to discuss the current status and the future direction of nuclear safety. There were some excellent presentations delivered, and the key challenges facing the industry were examined and discussed in depth. It was a great success.

One of the most important topics at the BGM examined how to build leadership at all levels of an organisation. After three decades, the design of plants, the resources and processes used around the world today are quite comparable. What makes a difference to performance is strong leadership. In particular, I encourage our members to use the principles in WANO’s Nuclear Leadership Attributes Effectiveness launched to much acclaim at the event, available to download HERE

As we look to the future, we will ensure WANO focuses its expertise and efforts on where we can provide the greatest value to our members. In particular, we want to provide strong support to those that typically need it most – the lower performing plants that are furthest away from excellence.

As I near the end of my tenure as WANO CEO, I want to reiterate how proud I am to have worked with you all to enhance safety and reliability at our member plants and facilities worldwide. We have achieved a great deal in that time, but there is undoubtedly so much more we can do to help our members achieve excellence in the years ahead.

I do hope you enjoy this special anniversary edition of Inside WANO.
