New Significant Operating Experience Report Workshops in Paris

By Kevin Dixon, Professional and Technical Development - Project Manager, WANO Paris Centre

SOER workshopIn a bid to ensure operating experience and best practices are shared across the nuclear industry, WANO publishes Significant Operating Experience Reports (SOERs). SOERs address significant events or trends and include recommendations requiring WANO members to identify and implement appropriate corrective actions as part of their membership. The implementation of each SOER recommendation is then reviewed during a WANO Peer Review.

A suite of documents is available to all WANO members for each SOER and includes a summary, training material, training slides, and 'how-to' guides.

Six months after a new SOER is published a workshop is organised by WANO Paris Centre to help members with the satisfactory implementation of the recommendations. Participants are encouraged to attend the workshop and share the challenges and experiences from their site.

The workshops provide an overview of the events or trends that led to the SOER being produced, and describe the intent of each recommendation and the actions required for them to be satisfactorily implemented. The workshops also provide a chance to discuss how recommendations are reviewed during peer reviews.

One of the SOER authors takes part in the workshop and acts as the mentor. Other people involved in production of the SOER attend the workshop to provide insights, background and facilitate action learning through hands-on, interactive breakout sessions.

Recent workshops in Paris Centre have looked at SOER 2013-2 Rev 1, Post-Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident Lessons Learned and SOER 2015-1, Safety Challenges from Open Phase Events.

The next new SOER Workshop to be organised by WANO Paris Centre will take place in Paris between 10 and 13 October 2016 and is designed to assist members with effective implementation of the recommendations associated with SOER 2015-2, Risk Management.
