WANO Statement 6 on the Situation in Ukraine

In its latest statement on Ukraine, the IAEA has reported damage at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine from recent military attacks. UN Secretary-General A. Guterres has also expressed grave concerns about the situation in and around Zaporizhzhia, and he called on all military forces to immediately cease activities in the immediate vicinity of the plant and not to target its facilities or surroundings.

These recent events at the plant have breached several of the IAEA’s seven indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security. WANO continues to support the IAEA in condemning any military action in or around the nuclear power plant, and strongly supports the need for an IAEA mission to Zaporizhzhia as soon as possible.

WANO commends the operators of Ukraine’s nuclear plants, particularly those at Zaporizhzhia, for their continued dedication to nuclear plant safety under extremely difficult working conditions. WANO continues to request that plant operators must be allowed to do their work safely without interference from any outside source.
