WANO employs a performance-based approach to assistance with its members between peer reviews. The Peer Review (PR) and enhanced Performance Monitoring (ePM) processes identify where gaps to sustained high performance exist and assistance in the form of member support is required.

Enhancing Organisational and Leadership Performance

The Industry Performance Improvement function provides a forum to support WANO members to enhance their organisational and leadership performance whilst providing a platform for enhancing professional and technical knowledge. Specific activities include workshops, seminars, training courses, and leadership courses. The Industry Performance Improvement function support the WANO Integrated Suite of Services to help members close gaps and reach excellence.

These services include:

  • Focused Assistance.
  • Organisational Diagnostic.
  • Member Support Missions.
  • Training and Leadership Development.
  • Seminars and Workshops.

Workshops, Training, and Support for Success

Activities by the Industry Performance Improvement service are designed to help provide station personnel with the leadership knowledge, skills, and standards required to support the highest levels of nuclear safety and excellence in operational performance. Members from all regions are encouraged to share and emulate best practices.

They provide an ideal opportunity to establish relationships with colleagues from around the world in areas such as operations, maintenance organisational effectiveness and engineering. Specific topics are chosen based on member requests, specific gaps or needs identified by WANO staff and/or industry trends.

Recent topics addressed by the service include task observation and managers in the field, human performance, organisational effectiveness, operating experience, equipment reliability and work management.

Industry Performance Improvement activities enable members’ personnel to increase their leadership skills and to exchange innovative information. A goal of the activities is to not only aid the members in fully understanding specific problems and issues, but also help identify workable solutions whenever possible.

Focused Assistance

WANO has introduced Focused Assistance as part of an integrated suite of services available to members, to facilitate improved performance at individual plants. It works alongside ePM in the Trends & Performance Monitoring service.

Organisational Diagnosis

The Organisational Diagnostics (OD) performance improvement tool is used in collaboration with WANO members to:

  • Identify organisational shortfalls causing/contributing to performance gaps.
  • Diagnose organisational and leadership drivers of the shortfalls that most need addressing.
  • Recommend solutions and actions that will address the shortfalls.

The use of the OD tool enables WANO and its members to work collaboratively, provide insights and recommendations to further enhance organisational and leadership performance.

Members Support Missions

Member support missions provide a means for WANO members to assist each other in improving safety or reliability at an individual member’s plant. A team of peers is selected for a member support mission from WANO’s membership based on their expertise in the applicable area, who works closely with the member to further improve performance.

Training and Leadership Development

Training courses are typically organised for WANO members to improve knowledge or skills in specific areas.

Leadership courses are intended to help existing and future leaders be successful in key positions at their stations. Programmes exist for all levels of leadership from first line supervisor to senior executive.

Workshops and Seminars

Workshops are interactive. Their purpose is to exchange information and experience, and participants are invited to share their own experience with other members. Seminars are intended to distribute information to WANO members.

Although each activity is conducted by one of the regional centres, these activities are open to all WANO members regardless of which region they are affiliated with.

Integrated Suite of Services

WANO services help member plants compare themselves against global standards of excellence and reach higher levels of safe and reliable performance.

Peer Review

Help members compare themselves against standards of excellence through in-depth, objective review of their operations by an independent external team.

Trends and Performance monitoring

Collects, screens, and analyses operating experience and performance data from nuclear power plants and facilities worldwide. Provides members with lessons learnt and industry performance insight reports.

Events and Networking

Key engagement opportunities that bring together nuclear operators of different areas and positions to establish and maintain close contact, to network and exchange operating experience, and benchmark against the highest standards.

New Unit Assistance

Supports members and new operating organisations during the transition from a project phase – including construction and commissioning – to safe and reliable operation.

Industry Working Groups

Working to solve issues in the industry by producing guidance, best practice documents and training. Many of them are eventually published as WANO documents.

WANO Young Generation

A network for collaborating with existing young nuclear organisations. WANO Young Generation empower these groups – nationally, regionally and internationally.
