The Trends and Performance Monitoring service collects, screens and analyses operating experience and performance data from nuclear power plants and facilities worldwide. It provides members with lessons learnt and industry performance insight reports to help them achieve and sustain high levels of safety and reliability. The goal is to allow benchmarking and to contribute to providing adequate member support to improve performance.

The Power of Sharing

Fundamental to this service’s success is the willingness of WANO members to openly share their operating experience and performance data for the benefit of other nuclear operators globally.

The Trends and Performance Monitoring service is made up of:

  • Operating Experience.
  • Performance Indicators.
  • Identification of Key Industry Issues.
  • Enhanced Performance Monitoring.

Insights and Improvements:
Our Shared Path to Excellence

Operating Experience

  • WANO Event Report – An ‘event’ is defined as any significant deviation from the normal expected functioning of a plant. When an event occurs, the affected plant management and staff analyse the event and complete a WANO Event Report (WER), which is then sent to their WANO regional centre and posted on the members’ website for other plants to learn from. Recognition of the importance of this activity is growing and, as a result, the total number of events reported by WANO members continues to increase.
  • Significant Operating Experience Reports (SOERs) – SOERs identify the principal contributors to significant events or trends in types of events and provide recommendations that members are expected to implement to prevent similar events at their plants. WANO peer review teams evaluate the effectiveness of stations’ actions to implement these recommendations.
  • Significant Event Reports (SERs) – SERs are advisory documents containing in-depth analyses of significant events to identify the lessons learnt for the benefit of other stations. Member stations are expected to review the lessons learnt and take action to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents. Training presentations are developed to help members communicate the content of SOERs and SERs to their plant staff. Reports are available in several languages on the members’ website.
  • Just-in-Time Reports – These are specially formatted briefing sheets for use in pre-job briefings to prepare personnel for specific tasks. The reports highlight relevant industry operating experience, key lessons learned and questions to encourage a detailed discussion of the planned task to ensure thorough work preparation.
  • Hot Topics – Hot Topic reports provide summaries and highlights of adverse performance trends or specific events.

Performance Indicators

The Trends and Performance Monitoring service maintains a database of performance indicators to measure and compare member performance in the areas of nuclear plant safety, reliability, and personnel safety.

These indicators are intended primarily for use by nuclear operating organisations to monitor their plant performance, to set challenging goals for improvement and to gain additional perspective on performance relative to that of other plants. It also provides an indication of the possible need to adjust priorities and resources to achieve improved overall performance.

WANO performance indicators are intended to support the exchange of operating experience information and to allow consistent comparisons of nuclear plant performance. It is expected that WANO performance indicators will encourage emulation of best industry performance and motivate the identification and exchange of good practices in nuclear plant operation.

Identification of Key Industry Issues

The WANO Industry Analysis process is called the Identification of Key Industry Issues.

The process identifies industry-wide gaps, issues or adverse trends. It combines all information available at WANO to gain higher level understanding of industry performance. The goal is to be efficient, effective and timely in addressing issues that affect a large number of stations.

Enhanced Performance Monitoring (ePM)

Enhanced Performance Monitoring is a structured and systematic approach to engaging with and supporting member plants to ensure that performance is sustained at or above the industry performance goals and continues to improve towards the industry standards of excellence.

WANO interacts with each member plant to:

  • Provide a high frequency view of performance and trajectory/sustainability.
  • Engage and collaborate to address any identified performance shortfalls and/or gaps to excellence and provide suitable WANO support to assist the member where appropriate.
  • Monitor the timeliness and effectiveness of member interventions for performance improvement.

Integrated Suite of Services

WANO services help member plants compare themselves against global standards of excellence and reach higher levels of safe and reliable performance.

Peer Review

Help members compare themselves against standards of excellence through in-depth, objective review of their operations by an independent external team.

Industry Performance Improvement

Provides a forum to support WANO members to enhance their organisational and leadership performance whilst providing a platform for enhancing professional and technical knowledge.

Events and Networking

Key engagement opportunities that bring together nuclear operators of different areas and positions to establish and maintain close contact, to network and exchange operating experience, and benchmark against the highest standards.

New Unit Assistance

Supports members and new operating organisations during the transition from a project phase – including construction and commissioning – to safe and reliable operation.

Industry Working Groups

Working to solve issues in the industry by producing guidance, best practice documents and training. Many of them are eventually published as WANO documents.

WANO Young Generation

A network for collaborating with existing young nuclear organisations. WANO Young Generation empower these groups – nationally, regionally and internationally.
