WANO signs a Memorandum of Understanding with CNEA

WANO and the China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which formalises their arrangement to work together to maximise commercial nuclear safety and reliability worldwide.
Under the terms of the agreement, CNEA has become a category 3 member of WANO and will be affiliated with the London Office as the primary centre, until such time as the Shanghai Office of WANO is established as a fully-fledged and operational Regional Centre. Additionally, the CNEA will also be affiliated with all four of WANO’s Regional Centres, and in recognition of this, individual bespoke MoUs have also been agreed between CNEA and each WANO Regional Centre.
WANO’s mission is to maximise the safety and reliability of the world’s nuclear power plants worldwide, by working together to assess, benchmark and improve performance through mutual support, exchange of information and emulation of best practices. CNEA, is a national non-profit non-governmental organisation with the objective to act as a bridge for CNEA members, to link with the government and the foreign counterparts.
Both organisations have a common shared goal of improving safety and reliability and the MoU is a formal agreement that underlines both organisations collaboration in these two areas.
Peter Prozesky, WANO Chief Executive Officer, stated: “We are delighted to formalise our partnership with CNEA with this MoU. We look forward to working closely with CNEA and our other Chinese members to collaborate further to enhance nuclear safety and reliability in commercial nuclear power plants in China, the wider region and the world.”
Zhang Tingke, the secretary general of the CNEA stated, “CNEA has officially joined WANO, marking that the cooperation between CNEA and WANO has entered a new stage. CNEA will be committed to actively contribute to WANO activities, providing support to improving the performance of nuclear power plants operating in China and around the world.”
