United in shaping a positive future for the industry

Welcome to the latest issue of Inside WANO, which focuses on topics covered at the Site Vice Presidents’ and Plant Managers’ conference that took place in Kyoto in September.

More than 130 delegates from 23 different countries and areas worldwide convened to attend the biennial event. Due to the restrictions during the pandemic, the conference was the first face-to-face, physical meeting for these senior nuclear plant leaders for five years.

The event took place in a warm and convivial atmosphere, with delegates demonstrating a united desire to share information, network and support each other to help member stations and the industry as whole improve performance.

With a theme of Unity – Working Together to Improve Global Industry Performance, the conference shared speakers and discussions on key challenges and opportunities for the industry. We reviewed current industry performance, and where the industry stands on the Action for Excellence performance improvement initiative.

The event was a success. I was impressed with the willingness of delegates to work together as a cohesive, collaborative, and committed community of operators to shape the nuclear future.

There are several articles in this latest issue that feature case studies from the conference of how our members in different parts of the world are applying lessons learnt and best practices to improve performance. I hope they inspire nuclear professionals working at utilities, plants and facilities worldwide to take action to maximise safety and reliability at their own plants.

I hope you enjoy this latest issue.
